Aside

Just returned from spending 6 days, 5 nights in beautiful Mexico, Cancun area. The Caribbean was beautiful, as always, unbelievable colors of blue. I did spend a bit too much time in the water and turned a not-so-beautiful shade of red, but it will pass. I love the Yucatan area and the Mayan history. We went to Chichen Itza and it was wonderful. Two years ago, I had traveled to Isla Mujeres with a girlfriend, and was blown away by its beauty, so my husband and I took a catamaran ride over to the island. It’s still beautiful, but sadly, we didn’t have enough time to explore like I would have liked. We did get to take a golf cart and ride about halfway around the island. My poor Farmer, having to suffer my wild driving and my limited speed bump vision! We met some wonderful people from Uruguay, Canada, Australia, US, and of course, Mexico.

Just before I started writing this post, I read an article about Disney trying to change the image of Merida, the leading female character from Brave. Someone’s trying to make her sexy. In whose eyes? In Mexico, it’s hot and naturally, one sees many swimsuits. I’ve collected a bit of weight over the years, and like most of us who live in the USA, I’m not exactly crazy about looking at myself in a swimsuit. But I saw many women my size and larger in two-piece suits. And you know what? I loved it. I know people who would say “oh gross”, but if you would, shame on you. Let’s quit listening to those who make up think we should be rail thin. Not only will it help our self-image, it will be a great example to our children. Kudos to my fellow humans abroad. I love learning from you.

That being said, I’m still happy to be home. Adios, Mexico. Via Con Dios.

“F” Words

Cookie Monster used to say (back when I watched Sesame Street with my kids) “C is for Cookie and that’s good enough for me!” It seems that here at OohShiny, “F” is for pottery & china that I’m partial to. The first china I sold on ebay was Franciscan, Autumn Leaves pattern. I’ve also become very interested in Frankoma Pottery, which was made in Oklahoma. Then there’s Fenton & Fostoria. Both companies made beautiful glass products. And last night I was researching a candy dish and dessert cups I had just bought, and they are–Firna, Indonesia. And now I see a set of 3 nesting bowls sitting here on my desk. Fitz & Floyd! Yep. “F” is for china and that’s good enough for me!

Have a fabulous day!!

Unexpected Treasures

Do you ever start your day with a plan, only to pretty much abandon said plan and do something totally different? Yep, me too. Yesterday started out as a girls day out for LizzyLou and me and in that respect, it stayed true to plan. We got our haircut, did our banking, shopped a little, pretty much the same stuff we always do when we’re together. On our April outing, I had called Patty Cake and asked if she’d like to have lunch with us, and we had such a good time, that I called her again, she said “sure!” and so off to lunch the three of us went. Patty Cake & I had decided we needed a change of scenery for lunch, so we chose a place that we both like and it also happens to be right across the street from an antique store. (You know where this is going.) Yes indeed, after lunch we hit the antique store. And then a thrift store. And then a friend of mine called me and let me know her mom is having a yard sale and has some items I might like to buy.

It was a nice day for friends, family and OohShiny:)

Let’s Do Launch!

I have a business called OohShinyCollectibles. I’ve been selling my products on ebay for 2 months now, and it’s been quite an experience. Fortunately, it’s all been positive so far. And today, I’ve decided to reach out further. It’s time to let my 500 closest facebook friends in on my business, so to speak. On the facebook page, we will discuss our favorite vintage/retro items. I mainly collect/sell glass, pottery, books, and magazines, but I’m open to whatever you’d like to share. Since the first of the year, I’ve been learning a lot, and I’m sure many of you have things I can learn as well.

If you’re seeing this on facebook, thanks for liking my page. Stop by anytime:)

So let’s do this–let’s talk about our OohShinyCollectibles!
